The stretch from mid-August into the second week of September is the quietest looking part of the Gentry calendar and, if you actually live here, one of the busiest. The peach lugs at Taylor's Orchard are down to the last varieties. The tractors on Taylor Orchard Road are being cleaned and staged. The Wooden Spoon has pie inventory that shifts by the day. Nothing here is a festival in the tourist sense. It is a working farm town keeping its own schedule.
That is the thesis worth holding onto for the next thousand words. When Wild Wilderness Drive-Through Safari announced its closure in March 2022 after roughly five decades of operation, a lot of regional coverage treated it as the end of what Gentry offered. The opposite turned out to be true. What is left is the version of the town that residents were already living in.
The Orchard Clock Is Still Running
Taylor's Orchard at 12801 Taylor Orchard Road is the reason a lot of Gentry households structure their August around a Saturday morning drive. According to pickyourown.org's Northwest Arkansas listing, the crop windows read:
- Peaches: mid-June until September
- Nectarines: late June through early July and again in late July
- Blackberries: all of July until mid to late August
That last line matters this week. If you have been putting off a blackberry run, the window is closing. The farm keeps a Monday-through-Saturday, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. schedule, closed Sundays, and takes cash, check, or SFMNP vouchers. Directions from Highway 59 go west on Highway 12 to Pioneer Lane, then follow the red-and-white "TAYLOR'S" signs the last two miles on paved road.
A note residents pass along and newcomers usually learn once: call first if you are driving from more than fifteen minutes away. The signs on the paved road are honest, but the crop board at the stand tells you what actually got picked that morning.
If you have kids, the orchard and the Tired Iron grounds sit on the same road. You can build a Saturday out of one drive.
The Show That Turns The Weekend After Labor Day Into Something
Tired Iron of the Ozarks runs the second of its two annual antique tractor and engine shows the weekend after Labor Day. The club's own site is direct about the pattern: two shows a year, the third full weekend of April in the spring and the weekend after Labor Day in the fall, both held free of charge on the 17-acre grounds at 13344 Taylor Orchard Road.
For 2026, that puts the fall show on the Friday, Saturday, and Sunday immediately after the September 7 holiday. Coverage of the 2024 fall show in the McDonald County Press laid out the shape of the weekend, and the club has held to it:
- Old tractors and hit-and-miss engines running the full length of the grounds each day
- A working blacksmith shop with the Blacksmith Organization of Arkansas on site Saturday
- A sawmill demonstration when conditions allow
- A swap meet for parts and collectibles that draws sellers from several states
- A car show alongside the tractors
- A noon Parade of Power all three days, with an announcer calling out each tractor and driver as they roll past the grandstand
The mess hall serves lunch. The pies get mentioned in the Eagle Observer's spring recap more often than the tractors do, which is either a compliment to the kitchen crew or a warning to arrive hungry.
If you live in Gentry, the show is the thing that reliably breaks the summer-to-school-year transition. It is also, functionally, the town's biggest weekend of the year that does not involve fireworks.
Where People Are Actually Eating In August

Two things to notice on that list. First, four of the seven are independent, single-location operations, which is unusual for a town this size in Northwest Arkansas. Second, there is no coffee shop on it. That is not an oversight. The morning coffee routine in Gentry runs through drive-through windows and the specialty soda case at Honeywheat, the Amish-and-Mennonite-run market up the highway toward Siloam Springs. If you have been in town six months and have not walked into Honeywheat's deli counter, that is the thing to add to this week.
The Farmers' Market On East Main
The Gentry Farmers' Market operates at 500 East Main Street, about 2.3 miles from Taylor's Orchard. It is small, it is seasonal, and it is where the peaches that did not go home in a customer's trunk from the farm often turn up next. In late August, expect the tail end of stone fruit, the first fall squash, tomatoes still holding on, and the honey vendors who work the summer circuit through Gravette and Siloam Springs. It is a stop, not a destination, and that is the correct way to use it.
The Safari's Absence Is Part Of The Story Now
Wild Wilderness Drive-Through Safari at 20923 Safari Road was, for decades, the answer to "what do you take out-of-town family to see in Gentry." The 400-acre property with a four-mile drive-through loop had been open since the 1970s. It closed to the public in March 2022, and it has not reopened.
The reason to mention this now, four years on, is that regional guidebooks and travel sites still list the safari as an active attraction. Expedia's Gentry vacation page did as of 2026. Roadside America's tip page treats it as historical. What the closure did, for residents, was consolidate the town's identity around the orchard, the tractors, the market, and the downtown grid. When someone visits, that is the tour. It fits into a single Saturday.
Small Things Worth Marking Between Now And The Show
- Blackberries at Taylor's: call this week to check picking conditions before making the drive.
- Tired Iron parade times: noon each day, Friday through Sunday, September 11 through 13. Bring folding chairs for the grandstand overflow.
- Honeywheat inventory: frozen entrees and specialty sodas restock midweek, according to regulars.
- The Wooden Spoon's caramel pecan pie: ask whether it is on the case when you sit down. It does not always survive the lunch rush.
- Park House late-night: the only kitchen in town open past most residents' dinner hour, useful to know before a Friday night without a plan.
What This Adds Up To
If a friend asks what there is to do in Gentry the last three weeks of summer, the honest answer is a short list of specific places on specific roads, and the pattern of the town shows through it. Taylor's finishes what it started in June. The tractors come back to Taylor Orchard Road. The seven restaurants keep their menus roughly where residents left them in July. The safari does not reopen, and the town keeps being the version of itself that was always underneath.
